It’s no secret that I like the odd alcoholic beverage (or seven), and consider ‘going out for cocktails’ to be a legitimate hobby and pastime. So when I was invited along to a cocktail making masterclass at Bar Opus recently, it was a strong yes from me. Bar Opus is in Birmingham city centre, just by Snow Hill train station and so a little bit out of the way of the other bars found all over the city. It was my first time visiting the bar, and my first ever cocktail making class, so I was intrigued to see what it was all about.
The masterclass consisted of us all making two cocktails. The first was a Honey Bee, which was a shaken cocktail. The ingredients in this one were:
50ml Jim Beam Honey
25ml Monin Vanilla
1/2 Bottle Vanillalicious
Honey and honeycomb as garnish
Secondly, we made a stirred cocktail: an Elderflower Spritz. This was a very fresh and zingy drink that would be perfect for a summer beer garden, and if you wanted to create it for yourself then these are the ingredients you’ll need:
It was a lot of fun, and we also learned some nice facts along the way about mixology and alcohol (for example, did you know that gin is essentially just a flavoured vodka? Everything I thought to be true is now being questioned). After the cocktail making finished, we were then all treated to afternoon tea, which was just GORGEOUS.
My first cocktail masterclass experience was definitely a good one, and I think it would be great for someone’s birthday, a hen do or just a fun afternoon out with the girls. At Bar Opus, the cocktail making class is only £15 per person, which I think is fab for an hour session and the two cocktails you get included too. The prices for afternoon tea also start at £15 per person for the traditional version, and a couple of quid more for the more boozy options.
A huge thank you to the staff at Bar Opus for being so welcoming and helpful during our class!
Have you ever tried a cocktail making class, or would you like to? Let me know in the comments!
Cocktail making classes just sound like so much fun! I’d love to do one for my birthday or a special occasion. The second one sounds delicious!
