Outfit of the Day: Winter Bare Legs

OOTD 19th Feb Collage 1Hat: eBay / Jumper: Primark / Skirt: eBay (old but similar here) / Boots: eBay

Hi everyone – you can’t see but I’m waving at you all vigorously, I hope you appreciate it.

So, ever since my recent post where I expressed loads of love for Nina Nesbitt’s style, I’ve been thinking I need to start being a bit braver when it comes to getting my stumpy little legs out. I thought this outfit was one of the best ways to do it, as people will be so distracted by the massive hat and jazzy jumper that they won’t have time to think ‘er I wonder if her legs are a bit chilly..?’

OOTD 19th Feb COllage 2Nails: Barry M Watermelon / Rings: Primark and eBay (mix) / Tights: ℅ Charnos

And if you were wondering whether they’re chilly then the answer is NO, IDIOTS. The lovely people at Charnos Hosiery were nice enough to send us over a couple of pairs of their tights to try out. While I don’t usually agree with flesh coloured tights, I have to say that they actually make hella loads of sense for wintery days when you don’t want to ruin a whole outfit by wearing black tights.

These ones happen to be from the Firm Energising Support range, which are designed to help shape and tone tired leglets (they’ve even been treated with nutrients like Vitamin E and Shea Butter, ooh fancy). A pleasant side effect of these is that they’re also nice and thick, keeping any wintery chills at bay!

What do you all think of this outfit? Do you brave getting your bare legs out in winter?

Matalan Spring/Summer 2014: Collection Preview

Now I don’t know about you chicas, but Matalan is a shop that personally I can usually take or leave. While I know in principle that they sell some decent stuff, I can rarely be bothered to venture inside to actually have a look. I’m not sure if it’s the same in other cities, but here in Coventry the stores are all located on various retail parks that are a bit of an effort to get to, plus once you get inside the carpet smells a bit musty and the fluorescent lights are a bit icky and so I generally end up yelling “nah, CBA!” and skip out again to go into Pets At Home to look at guinea pigs.

But, dear readers, no more – no more I say! Today the Look website has featured a preview of the Matalan S/S14 collection and I have to say, it’s looking pretty good. You can see all of the photos here if you so wish, but here are some of my favourite picks.

Matalan 1Panelled Pencil Skirt, £12
Gold Brogues, £12
Monochrome Swing Dress, £16
Croc Tote Bag, £20
Pleated Midi Skirt, £16
White Brogues, £15

Matalan 2Pink Coat, £40
Slogan Tee, £8
Daisy Print Cami, £6
Ostrich Strap Tote, £20
Mesh Panel Full Skirt, £16

The midi skirts all need to be mine immediately, and the (large) portion of my brain that’s dedicated to my current brogue obsession  is working overtime at the sight of these jazzy pairs. Yes, slogan tees are a bit cringe and yes, slogans about fashion are particularly cringe, but there’s still something about that roll-sleeved number that I quite like; I think it would go well tucked into one of the skirts or paired with some leather trousers. Loose fits are set to remain big news this S/S so the cami and swing dress are both bang on trend, and of course any high street shop worth their salt are stocking a version of the pastel pink coat right now. Throw in some statement handbags and we have a collection that would surely convert even the biggest Matalan cynic..?

Overall I’m really impressed with this range and will definitely be eschewing Pets At Home in favour of Matalan in my next retail park visit. Well, I suppose I can still pop in and see the rabbits afterwards. For their benefit, not mine.

What do you all think of this collection?

Outfit of the Day: Missguided Playsuit & Cream Heels

Missguided Playsuit

Collage 4309

Hi everyone, Frodo here.

After Claire’s post yesterday about ‘How To Dress Like Nina Nesbitt‘, I’ve basically come to the conclusion that I have the shortest legs ever and should go and live in a tiny leg home. Sob. People keep telling me that being short is great, but the only good thing that I have experienced so far is that you can quite easily dress like a hobbit for Halloween.

Anywho, last weekend me and my dear chum Claire went to visit our tip top pal Alex in Cambridge, and we had an exciting night of cocktails and lurching around the dancefloor. I purchased this pretty little Missguided playsuit especially for the occasion, and I’m happy to say that it was a bargain and I love it.

I paired it with my trusty Forever 21 cream heels and my equally as trusty New Look leopard print envelope bag. HUZZAH.

What do you think of this one gals? If you’re keen to get your hands on a playsuit just like this one, you can find them over here. It was a measly £19.99 and comes in an excellent array of colours, so it would be rude not to really! It doesn’t look like they do the navy one anymore, but the cobalt blue is just as great.

How to Dress Like… Nina Nesbitt

Nina Collage 2Oh. My. Gosh. Excuse me ladies and gentlemen, but I’m currently in the throes of an enormous new girl crush. If you’ve listened to any form of radio in the last couple of months then you’ll probably already be familiar with Nina Nesbitt’s current track ‘Selfies’ (note to self: probably not cool enough to say ‘track’, stick with ‘song’ or perhaps ‘record’ in future). Although it had firmly been stuck in my head for weeks and weeks, I actually had no idea what the girl behind the music looked like – and now I do and OH MY GOD, I love her.

Nina Nesbitt, I bow down to your enviable trainer collection, impeccable sense of style, and wondrous, wondrous hair…

Nina Collage 1Let’s just take a moment to bask in her style glory, shall we?

Nina Collage 3The fact of the matter is that I will never be able to accessorise my own outfits with her amazing legs (and I’ll cry about this forever more), but here are some things I definitely can pick up if I’m wanting to channel my inner Nina Nesbitt:

  • Some vintage denim shorts such as these Levis from eBay
  • A statement bomber jacket like this tartan one from Pretty Little Thing
  • A classic leather aviator jacket; Missguided do a cute cropped one
  • A velvet dress such as this Boohoo number
  • A classic pork pie hat, for which Topshop are the obvious choice this season
  • Some classic Converse low-tops which can be bought from Office
  • A vintage looking chunky knit; this Topshop one is perf for the job
  • Some full length dungarees for slouching around in – these ASOS ones have ripped knees for added slouchy points

What do you all think of Nina Nesbitt’s style? Love it or hate it?

Collection Sheer Loose Powder Review

1

My dear friends and admirers.

Today is a momentous day. NAY. Today is the day that history was made. Today, I am writing to tell you that loose powder is great. No more will we think ‘pahaha loose powder is for my nan and her shiny mate Mildred’. No more will we breeze past the loose powder products in disgust. I am here to tell you that this loose powder has changed my life.

Practically my entire life has been plagued by my shiny face. And I don’t mean shiny in a cute dewy way. I mean full blown you-could-use-my-face-to-find-ships-lost-at-sea shiny. Since learning to apply makeup like a vaguely normal person and eschewing blue eyeliner with a firm hand, I’ve always used powder. I know face powder isn’t for everyone, but is an absolute essential in my makeup bag. I also like a heavy duty foundation, so a nice dusting of powder helps to set my makeup excellently.

I’ve used quite a few different powders and my usual tends to be Rimmel’s Stay Matte pressed powder because it’s cheap and safe. I’ve used Bourjois Radiance Powder too – which I liked but wasn’t the best at keeping my face matte all day. I’ve also used Collection pressed powder pretty frequently – but never used their Sheer Loose Powder.

2

I grabbed it the other day because I needed a translucent powder, of which there were none in the pressed powder section. How I wish I had grabbed it sooner. If you take anything from this review, it should be this: this is the best powder ever and I strongly encourage that you go and buy it – and proceed to be happy in all areas of your life.

My main points of happiness with the Sheer Loose Powder is this:

  • It smells like my mum. This sounds weird, but I’m pretty sure my mum uses this powder and it reminds me of her. My mother is a lovely, tiny, neat woman who always has an organised handbag – so this is a big positive for me and takes me back to the days where I sniffed her face. I’m sure there must have been at least one day I did this for a laugh.
  • It keeps my face matte all day. This is unheard of. I always always always have to powder at least once a day, especially when I’m at work. The only time I didn’t have to powder was when I was using Dermalogica’s Skin Perfect Primer (amazing btw). I don’t know what wizardry is in this powder, but it keeps my skin looking relatively normal for 9+ hours – without touching up.
  • It sets my makeup well. There’s no need to expand on this really, but it does a good job of making sure everything stays where it should and things don’t go wandering about my head.
  • It’s not heavy. I always thought that loose powder would be super heavy and rubbish. I don’t think that this is at all – it feels light on my skin.
  • It’s cheap. It genuinely costs £2.99, no joke. I don’t know how either, I imagine that the employees at Collection are related to Gandalf.

gandalf_526

As with any product, there are a few downsides too. I will put these in bullet point form too, because apparently that is what I do now.

  • I find the sieve annoying.
  • I hate the applicator pad. No one uses applicator pads.

I really don’t think I’ll be using another powder again (unless someone decides to treat me to a nice MAC Mineralise Powder). I really do love this though. Snaps for you Collection, I am adding this to the list of excellent and underrated products you do.

What about you? Have you tried this powder before? What do you think?

Outfit of the Day: Motel Rocks & Kurt Geiger

OOTD 11th Feb CollagePlaysuit: Motel Rocks / Heels: Kurt Geiger / Bag: Primark / Necklace: Primark

Greetings one and all. At the weekend Lauren and I finally got off our butts (or ‘botties’ as Lauren would say – vom) and went to finally visit one of our best friends from uni who lives in the lovely ole’ town of St Ives, Cambridge. We headed out into Cambridge for many a Long Island Ice Tea, and this is what I put on my body to do so.

I loved this Motel playsuit, but unfortunately it was a little big for me so looking back I’m not that sure about it. One thing I’m always sure about though is the beauty of my Kurt Geiger heels, which were actually a Christmas present a couple of years ago from an ex boyfriend (the shoes outlived the romance, alas). The platform makes me almost average height in them (success) and I love love LOVE the Dalmatian print as it’s a bit different from the usual leopard – plus it allows me to stomp around feeling like Cruella DeVille.

What do you all think?

MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick Review: Sensual Sparks

Why hi there,

Today I am bringing you some exciting news. I actually won a Dave Lackie competition on Friday (don’t follow Dave? Get with the pic). I never win anything and I may have launched myself across the room shouting “THE UNIVERSE IS MINE”. It turned out that my fabulous prize was a MAC lipstick and Aerin Lauder’s new perfume, Gardenia Rattan. Since I don’t agree with reviewing perfumes online (until there is some kind of ‘scratch and sniff’ screen function), I thought that I’d give you a super fun MAC lipstick review. Because we love MAC here at Stylingo. With the fiery passion of girls who have had an unfortunate bonfire incident.

MAC2

MAC3

The MAC lipstick I received (it came in literally 2 days. From Canada. How?!) was their Amplified Creme Lipstick. For those of you who don’t know, this lipstick finish is one of their most moisturisng and leaves quite a glossy result. I tend to prefer lipsticks that are a lot more moisturising, and this one definitely fits the bill well. As you can see from the swatch as well, it is quite pigmented and you don’t need loads and loads of layers for a good colour.

MAC4

MAC5

with flash / without flash

Which brings us nicely onto the colour. It’s a lovely nude, which is actually quite a lot darker than I usually wear (definitely part of the I-don’t-want-you-to-see-my-lips gang). Saying that, it has a marvy caramel/honey coloured pigment that I love – it’s called Sensual Sparks for those who want to hunt for it. I think it goes quite nicely with my new ginger head and I see myself getting some excellent everyday wear out of it. Really pleased with bells on!

And of course, where would a MAC lipstick review be without a mention of the smell? It smells like vanilla/caramel and I am seriously tempted to take a bite out of it to see if it tastes as good as it smells. Someone needs to invent a sweet that tastes like this lipstick smells.

Big thank you to Dave Lackie for sending these fabulous items, I’m so excited to wear this lipstick every day of my life and I am very upset that one day it will run out.

What do you think of this shade? What’s your favey MAC lipstick?

Outfit of the Day: Karma Shift Dress

OOTD 7th F Collage 2
Dress: c/o Karma Clothing / Bag: Forever 21 / Shoes: eBay

Firstly, my apologies for the lighting in these photos – the sunlight abandoned me a few minutes too early while I was trying to snap these. Secondly and more importantly, a huge thank you to Karma Clothing for sending us this beaut little dress!

I’d been tempted by quite a few thing from Karma before but am always a bit weary about ordering from online stores for the first time, just because sizing can be so difficult to judge (unless you have something as sophisticated as, I don’t know, a tape measure – but who has that sort of newfangled technology at their fingertips?) However I ordered this in a Small and I would say it would happily fit most people between the UK 6-10 range – even midgets like moi.

To be honest, I was spoiled for choice on the Karma website. They have so many lovely dresses in particular in at the moment, and the prices are right up my street (Cheap Street, FYI). I eventually settled on this dress though; the shift/tunic style is set to remain big news as we head into S/S 14 and I thought the coral would be perfect in the warmer months as well as adding a bit of cheer to the dreary days right now.  The baroque print is also a nice detail touch, and it’s definitely good for me to move away from my beloved florals for at least one day.

With super quick delivery on top of this amazing dress, I would fully recommend Karma Clothing to y’all and can’t wait to make a few cheeky purchases myself come payday!

Have any of you ordered from Karma yet? What would you buy?

How To Do Valentine’s Day When You Find It Horribly Awkward

It’s that time of year again, I’m afraid. The time when the population is divided into two very different groups.

  1. The Singles: Usually stereotyped as hiding under their duvets on Valentine’s Day munching on a tub of Cookie Dough and swigging Absolut straight from the bottle. They can usually be identified by the stench of loneliness and permanently damp hair (from crying themselves to sleep every night, of course).
  2. The Couples: Ridiculously happy and often found wearing heart shaped/red-hued clothing on 14th Feb. These can be identified as the people who selfishly book restaurant tables well in advance and insist on causing nation-wide nausea with too much PDA.

But let’s all be honest. Most of us don’t fit into either of these groups. If you’re single, Valentine’s Day is just another day of chilling with a cup of tea and watching a bit of Toddlers and Tiaras. It’s not tragic, it just means you don’t have to bother about making lasagne for anyone else but yourself. If you’re in a relationship, Valentine’s Day is nice enough too. Going out for dinner is always a pleasant experience and there is usually some kind of Valentine’s Day discount on the go too – win-win by all accounts AM I RIGHT? I’ve not met many people that actually say “Oh yes, buying my boyfriend/girlfriend a load of stupid presents just after Christmas is exactly what I want to do”.

Don’t even get me started on Valentine’s Day presents. My ex-boyfriend bought me a teddy bear that said ‘I love you’ before he had actually even said it himself. I may as well have gone out with the bear, maybe the relationship would have gone better. What on earth am I supposed to do with a teddy bear? I’m not five years old. I’m not displaying that in my bedroom, it’s embarrassing. Now, don’t get me wrong. I like Valentine’s Day and I’m not averse to buying the fellow in my life a few presents. But all of this heart nonsense and ridiculous cards that have horrible cringey poems on them need to be gone.

So, annnyyyywayyy how can you do Valentine’s Day when you find it terribly awkward?

Do buy cards that don’t make you want to die.

Relationships are complicated. Whether you’ve been married for years, going out with someone for a while or have just started dating, one card that says “I will love you until the end of time, my life, my love, my Valentine” is guaranteed to make your significant other want to throw up. It makes me want to throw up right now and we’re nowhere near V Day. If you’re looking for a card that’s less awkward and less horrible, think about investing in something a little more true to life.

Cards

Do buy presents that aren’t ridiculous.

A heart shaped pillow, a teddy bear, chocolate, flowers. Just no. Why do you insist on trivialising our relationship with useless rubbish that I will never use, will make me fat and/or will die a week after I received them.

The most useful presents I have ever been given for Valentine’s Day were a camera and a pair of Kurt Geiger heels. What more could a girl want? I used that camera for years and I still wear my Geigers. That tragic teddy bear went in the bin pretty much as soon as I got it. Call me cruel, but that is just the way it is. Here are some sensible Valentine’s Day presents, both for him and for her.

presents

Don’t make heart shaped brownies.

This extends to any sort of food, but especially desserts. I’m just going to eat it and I would rather you showed your love for me through fixing my laptop. Or at the very least saying, “you have fantastic hair”.

foodDo go on a normal date.

If you usually sit about and watch TV (and enjoy it too), then why is it suddenly normal to go to a stuffy fine dining restaurant on Valentine’s Day? Or even worse, go something activity based like mini golf or bowling. If you like that sort of thing, then that’s fine. But don’t feel like you have to do something “romantic” just because it’s Valentine’s Day. Having a nice dinner at home can be romantic. And going to the cinema can be romantic too (especially since you don’t have to talk for a couple of hours). Valentine’s Day is hugely less awkward if you don’t put any pressure on it. HUGELY.

dates

My main ‘lets make Valentine’s Day less awkward and horrible’ tip is to be yourself in every way, shape or form. There’s no need to turn into some mental tragedy because you’re single. Equally, there’s no need to drown yourself in rose petals and hearts. Let’s all just be normal human beings. Without the pink glitter.

Seventeen Instant Glow Cream Bronzer | Review

DSCN4103If you read our blog regularly then you might know that Seventeen are one of our favey brands of the past year, after seriously upping their game following their re-brand and a release of a plethora of bangin’ new products (you can check out all of our Seventeen reviews by clicking here if you so wish). During a recent Boots trip I was hugely excited, then, to see a couple of new releases. In fact, I might even have done a bit of an excited dance right there and then in the aisle.

I picked up the Instant Glow Cream Bronzer, a contouring product ‘for face and décolletage’ (ooer).

DSCN4104It might look a bit daunting in the palette, but rest assured that the bronzer’s actually very lightweight upon first application, so the fact that it only comes in one shade shouldn’t be an issue for paler girls out there. It’s also buildable for when you’ve got more of a tan, and never feels too heavy or remotely greasy despite its cream texture.

DSCN4112The best thing about the product is its blendability. When you use powder bronzers to contour with, it’s easy to put far too much on and end up buffing away like a lunatic to avoid looking too Snog Marry Avoid-y. The cream formula is much, much, MUCH easier to work with, blending with foundation and concealer like an absolute dream. I’ve been applying with my fingers and then blending with my Real Techniques Beauty Blender, but you can do whatever you like because it’s your life and I’m not here to tell you how to live it.

1689188_10152596775342786_1408801181_nHere’s a terrible iPhone snap to give you a vague idea of how the bronzer looks under the cheekbones and down the side of the nose. Decided to leave the décolletage out of it; it’s only Wednesday after all.

Overall I’m madly in love with this product, and it’s another roaring success for Seventeen. At only £4.99 it’s a downright bargain, and Seventeen also have a 3 for 2 offer on at the moment so you should make this a staple of your makeup bag immediately. You can pick it up online here or get off your lazy bum bums and go into your nearest Boots store.

Until next time, ratbags.

Have any of you tried the Instant Glow Cream Bronzer yet? What are your thoughts?
