The word ‘natural’ is definitely not one that Lauren and I use often in relation to our hair and makeup – unless it’s in the context of ‘ugh, look how natural my face looks today. This is disgusting; pass me the foundation and a trowel’. View Full Post
Autumn/Winter Trends: Wishlist.
Claire and I are definitely being those girls at the moment. We have decided that summer is officially on it’s way out (even though I tried to wear I chunky knit to work today and may have somewhat melted) and it is now time to get properly excited about autumn/winter. Even though we live together, work together and generally see far too much of each other, we’ve somehow not run out of things to say to each other. This has been especially true this week, where we have spent approximately 100000000* hours discussing how we’re going to work the autumn/winter trends and what things we’re going to look at buying.
I must admit, I have been quite worried about the autumn/winter trends. So worried in fact, that I had a nightmare I dressed head to toe in tartan last night and Kate Moss told me I looked like a genuine fool (which is probably something that would actually happen if I ever met K Mossy). After some hyperventilating, a few cups of tea and some soothing head patting by Claire, I’m feeling a bit more positive NAY EVEN EXCITED about things to come. So excited that I’ve put together my wishlists for each trend, even though most high street stores haven’t revealed their autumn/winter collections yet. WHOOPS, I’m keen. Call this a autumn/winter trend sneak peak if you will (you probably wont), but here’s what I’m thinking of investing in this autumn/winter.
Tartan Tshirt: Topshop | Tartan Blouse: Boohoo | Tartan Cambridge Satchel | Paisley/Tartan Scarf: Miss Selfridge | Tartan Cigarette Trousers: River Island | Leather Panel Tartan Leggings: Boohoo |
Does anyone else have that problem of not really loving a trend but then coming round to it as soon as it’s going out of fashion? SNORE. This happens to me constantly. For example, I have finally decided that I like creepers approximately 2 years late. With this in mind, I have started convincing myself that I like the tartan trend months in advance so I’m prepared for the new season. I think I might have become as obsessed with it as I am with neon at the moment, so I’m going to be seriously investing in some key tartan pieces when the time comes! Oh to own that Cambridge satchel…anyone want to lend a homegirl £140?
PVC Skater Skirt: Glamorous | T Bar Shoes: Topshop | PVC Backpack: Topshop | PVC Mini Skirt:Topshop | PVC Scunchie: River Island | Leather Look Tshirt: OMG Fashion | Patent Skinny Belt: ASOS |
I’m a bit dubious of the autumn/winter PVC trend but I’m willing to embrace it with rubbery arms, provided things don’t get too prostitutey.
Rose Midi Dress: Missguided | Mint Acid Wash Mom Jeans: Topshop | Lilac Beanie: Topshop | Yellow Crop Top: Missguided | Pink Watch: Olivia Burton |
My theory is that winter pastels are going to be more on the ‘dusty’ side – with more grey tones in them that the bright summery pastels. This is definitely an autumn/winter trend that I’m looking forward to! Apparently I’m really excited to wear lilac.
WELL. These are just the top three autumn/winter trends that I’m looking forward to! I’m also really keen for oversized coats, metallics (sorry Claire) and wearing dark plum lipstick again.
What do you all think? Have you got any trends you’re excited about?

Lauren and I are so crazy keen for Autumn/Winter shopping already that we actually wake up and get angry that it’s still warm outside (yes, we’re those people). View Full Post
August Haul: Primark, New Look & More!
‘Ello ladies!
I have a bit of a confession to make…I am supposed to be on a spending ban. That went well.
I’ve been trying to invest in some simpler pieces to go with the more jazzy things in my wardrobe so I don’t have to wear too many mad prints at once – I usually am a bit of a ‘AHH LOOK AT THE LEOPARD PRINT. LOOK AT THE FLORALS’ kind of gal and have very little interest in plain things. But as a working girl in her 20s, sometimes turning up to the office in acid wash and leopard print isn’t the most professional way to dress.
New Look Dress | Primark Shirt | Missguided Shorts
I managed my new simple mantra with *two* of my recent purchases, so all in all not too shabby! You can’t g wrong with a t-shirty style skater dress and I love the rose colour of this one! Rose is also a big colour for autumn/winter, so I’m pleased to be getting a few on-trend items in my wardrobe already! The shirt is very me and I have about 10 cream blouses in my cupboard already…one more can’t hurt, right? I plan to wear it with these jazzy neon floral shorts on Saturday night for our house party!
Lush Happy Hippy Shower Gel | Lush Dirty Springwash Shower Gel | Lush Bohemian Soap | Lush Ocean Salt Facial Scrub | Lush Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub | Lush Whoosh Shower Jelly | Maybelline Baby Lips | Nivea Day Cream | Nivea Cleansing Lotion | Palmer’s Natural Bronze | Purdie’s Hand Lotion | Model’s Own Nail Varnish |
Phew, we have a few beauty products on the go don’t we! I haven’t used any of my Lush stuff yet, so I can’t comment on those. The Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm is something I seriously don’t get. It’s just vaseline, basically. WHAT IS THE HYPE ABOUT?! The Purdie’s hand lotion smells amazing and I picked it up in Scotland. The rest is pretty self explanatory, oui oui?
H&M Pork Pie Hat | New Look Bag | Primark Necklace and Earrings
I’ve been after a pork pie hat for AGES, but refused to pay Topshop prices because I am a tramp poor girl. I found this bad boy in H&M for £8.99 so it swiftly found it’s way into my shopping basket! It’s going to be another great autumn/winter piece and I’m very excited to start wearing it! The bag is another transitional piece (and one that was desperately needed after my main handbag began to fall apart!). It’s not the best quality but it cost me £10 in the New Look sale so you can’t complain really. Primark is one of my favourite places to go for jewellery and it definitely didn’t disappoint this week! I love this necklace and the earrings are right up my street (although very plasticy!). I also bought a really cute bee/bug ring but I couldn’t find it while I was taking these photos, cry.
New Look brogues | Converse from Schuh
This pair of converse are actually a couple of weeks old and something I didn’t buy myself! My parents got them for me for my birthday, which was very lovely of them! I claimed I wasn’t a trainer girl for about a year and that has definitely change…so comfy! The brogues were another attempt at dressing like a grown up and since buying them about a week ago, they’ve had A LOT of wear. I’m very pleased with them, definitely a great classic addition to my wardrobe.
PHEW. That is pretty much all of my recent buys. I think I went a bit mad, but you know. You have to speculate to accumulate, right? (Anyone know what that actually means?).
What do you all think of my August buys?
August Glossybox: Review & First Impressions
As you may know if you read my review of last month’s Glossybox (which I somewhat dramatically titled A Tale of Disappointment and Woe), I’m new to the Glossybox club and was somewhat disappointed with the my first delivery. God hates a quitter though (probably), so I decided not to cancel my box and to see whether this month offered me something a bit more exciting.
The theme this month is ‘High Flyers’, and the box is ‘filled with beauty goodies for the girl on the go’. To keep in with this idea, the products come from all over the world and are under 100ml – supposedly so that you can take them on planes with you (thoughtful, or a convenient excuse to fob us off with some teeny products? You decide). So, what’s in my August Glossybox?
Oceane Femme Makeup Remover Pen
This product is the one that jumps out to me as the most interesting this month. I’ve seen makeup removing pens before – I think e.l.f. potentially do one, but don’t hold me to that. I’m intrigued to see how well this works, as I do tend to cause havoc when applying eyeliner and mascara. Could this product replace the tried and tested ‘cotton bud and a bit of saliva’ removal method?! We shall see. This isn’t available in the UK yet, so doesn’t have an RRP, but for a full size product with three replacement nibs (on a side note, I hate the word nib), this seems to be quite a good addition to my makeup bag.
Emite Eyelash Curler
This eyelash curler retails at £20, making it the best quality item in this month’s box. I already have an eyelash curler that I get along fine with, and to an extent think an eyelash curler is an eyelash curler – but then, Lauren once did tell me a horror story about a girl who SNIPPED OFF HER LASHES with a dodgy curler, so maybe it is the sort of tool that’s worth having a decent one of.
Jelly Pong Pong 2-in-1 Eyeliner & Shadow
It’s definitely the idea of products like this that first drew me to the Glossybox subscription – my main interest is makeup and I wanted to try brands I hadn’t encountered before, such as Jelly Pong Pong. At first I thought this would be a double-ended product, and was surprised to see that it’s actually a chunky pencil which is supposed to serve as both eyeliner and eyeshadow depending on how you use it. I’m a little suspicious of products that try to do more than one thing (2 in 1 shampoos and conditioners, I’m looking at you!) but maybe this will work just fine.
I’m a little devvoed to have received the plum shade rather than the black or bronze as I’m generally not a fan of coloured eye products, but I’ll still give this a whirl. Who knows, maybe I’ll become a huge coloured makeup fan and bring back the pink mascara I wore when I was fifteen. Hopefully not though.
It apparently retails at £10.50, which I would never pay for an eyeliner personally (unless it came with a generously portioned serving of cake) but which definitely bumps up the overall value of the Glossybox this month.
Philosophy Facial Cleanser (Sample)
What is this – a facial cleanser for ants?! Okay I’m just being snitty – I know sample products are a normal thing in Glossyboxes. Also, this apparently costs £17.50 for a full sized bottle, so I suppose it falls into the luxury product range. It’s a 3 in 1 cleanser that is appropriate for all skin types…. woohoo? As always, it’s hard for me to get excited about skincare.
Juicy Couture’s Viva La Juicy Noir (Sample)
At first I came close to throwing a hissy fit when I saw this second sample product in the box. I then re-considered and decided it was actually nice to get a bit of perfume in the box, plus I do really like Juicy Couture scents so I’ll definitely use this up quite quickly. On first impressions I love the smell, and a full sized bottle could make its way onto my birthday wish list as my perfume reserves are running dangerously low.
I think one of the worse things you can do when you get your Glossybox is to see what other people have got in theirs. Of course I did this though, and first of all read the beautiful Vicky from Stone’s Got Style’s post on her box. I think it was this that made me angry about my two samples, as Vicky received a full-sized Tresemme hair conditioning treatment as her fourth product, which my ratty old weave would have been crying out for.
Generally, though, I don’t think it’s a bad box this month. My first three products are all pretty solid and would definitely appeal to a range of people. I’m still not wowed by Glossybox and am interested to hear from anyone who has subscriptions with other companies. Also, let me know in the comments section what you all received in your boxes!
No. 7 Exceptional Definition Mascara: Review
Hey there pals and strangers! Continuing with my well-documented quest for the perfect mascara, today I come to you bearing my review of No. 7 Exceptional Definition. If you read my Benefit ‘They’re Real’ review then you will know that this was one very difficult mascara to follow. I loved it with the passion of a thousand amorous lovers (ooh I don’t think I’ve managed to make a post creepy this early on before, 5 points to Gryffindor), but decided to see what else the mascara market had to offer. Also I will say on a side note that They’re Real began to dry up around the 6 week mark, which is worth bearing in mind if you’re not willing to spend almost £20 that regularly.
I asked the lovely Twitter world for recommendations for a mascara to try next and had YSL’s ‘Baby Doll’ suggested to me, which sounded amazing. Unfortunately, this month I had a few horrible things I needed to pay out for, such as car tax (when I tell you that I still haven’t passed my test and so fork out for a car I can’t even legally drive, you’ll be able to imagine how much this pained me), and so I decided to be sensible and seek out a more purse-friendly high street option. One that stuck out to me in a review was No. 7’s Exceptional Definition mascara, so I hot-footed it to Boots to pick this little baby up. You know how every time you go to Boots you get a No. 7 voucher? Yeah, well I think some random goat must be going in my purse and munching mine because I couldn’t find one anywhere, so had to pay the full amount of £11. Luckily the nice shiny packaging stopped me from being too angry and I went on my merry way.
The main thing that drew me to this mascara is the brush; I much prefer plastic brushes to synthetic as I find they’re better at separating my lashes. The brush is also a ‘triple effect’ one with three different types of bristles which serve different lengthening, volumising and separating purposes. So, onto the results:
I’m really impressed with this mascara. As you can hopefully see from the photos, it added some good length, colour and definition to my mousey little excuse for eyelashes. The application is a little messy due to the rather wet formula, though I also found that to happen with They’re Real and don’t mind it too much. Depending on your method of application, it can clump a little – for example, that little habit of turning the brush vertical to wiggle on your bottom lashes is an absolute no-no with this. Overall though, I would say the effect isn’t much different to They’re Real and so I’m very happy indeed. I’ve been using it for about two weeks now and so can safely say that its staying power is quite good – maybe not quite as long-lasting as Benefit, but on the plus side it is much, much easier to remove at the end of the day than that stubborn little thing.
Have any of you tried No. 7’s Exceptional Definition mascara? What did you think?

Nivea Daily Essentials Skincare: Review
Good morning, special friends.
It is Saturday and today is the day that I continue my birthday celebrations, despite the fact that my birthday isn’t until Monday (clearly turning 22 is a big deal that warrants 3 weeks of celebrating). I’m going for dinner and drinks in Birmingham tonight, which is all very exciting – apart from the fact that my gentleman friend refuses to accept that the shorts I want to wear are dinner appropriate. He is wrong. When will boys learn that they have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to fash?
I’m talking skincare today, which is something that I am very passionate about. Not because I’m particularly an expert in the world of skincare, but because I like the idea that a cream or cleanser will make me BOOTIFUL. If you follow us on Twitter (hint, hint – follow us on Twitter), you might have seen me bang on to various people about how I have terribly oily skin that is prone to breakouts, which often make me look like I have a boil affliction. I once had a HUGE spot that Claire affectionately referred to as my boil and I get the feeling that she was quite sad when it finally disappeared. Interestingly enough, I have only recently begun to use skincare that is appropriate for my skin type. Don’t ask me why, it is probably because I wanted to pretend that I had lovely normal skin that only needed a spot of tinted moisturiser. Using products specifically for oily skin has made a big difference and I only get the occasional breakout these days (mostly when I’m stressed because I have nothing to wear).
A few months ago, I invested in some fancy skincare from Clarins. I did a blog post about it, which you can read here, and promised a review when I had got a bit more use out of it. Well, I have now just about finished the cleanser and toner and I really did like it. However, I didn’t think that it was anything massively special and certainly not special enough for me to fork out £20+ every few months (I am tight. I am sorry). With this in mind, I decided to go for something a bit more high street this time around and headed to Boots to make my decision last week.
I am a HUGE fan of Nivea products. I think they are fantastic quality for the price and they have a smell that I just love (it reminds me of using Nivea suncream as a child, I am transported to the beach every morning and evening!). I did a review of their In Shower Moisturiser a while back, which is one of my favourite beauty products at the moment, but I also am a big fan of their Irresistibly Smooth body moisturiser. I sort of gravitate to the Nivea skincare range when I go to Boots or Superdrug and while I did try to shop around, there wasn’t really any contest. I picked up a cream cleanser from the Daily Essentials range as well as a Daily Essentials moisturiser. They’re both geared towards combination or oily skin, so I was eager to see what difference they actually made.
Daily Essentials Refreshing Cleansing Lotion:
This promises to cleanse, hydrate, remove makeup and give a fresh skin feeling. I have a bit of a disclaimer to make; I don’t notice a huge difference between cream cleansers. Most of them do what they promise – at the end of the day, how hard is it to take makeup off really?! BUT saying that, I do really like this one. It smells great, it’s sensitive enough to use around the eye area and I would give it top marks for hydration. It hasn’t caused any breakouts and my problem chin area has stayed spot free! It’s really cheap too, so definitely worth picking up if you are looking for a budget friendly face cleanser.
Daily Essentials Oil Free Moisturising Day Cream:
This is definitely my favourite buy of the two. I have found it to be an AMAZING base for makeup especially; it really controls my shiny t-zone. I don’t even bother using primer under my foundation anymore, this stuff does the job of both moisturiser and primer in my eyes! It’s really light and feelings quite cooling when you put it on, which is nice when you have to wake up at 6am every day. I have quite large pores and this moisturiser doesn’t clog them in the slightest. My only beef with it is that it is quite a small tube and I can see myself getting through it very quickly. But saying that, it is also very budget friendly so I will be perfectly happy buying it again in a month or so. I’m finding it the best day cream I have used to date – thoroughly recommend it ladies!
Have any of you tried these before? What do you reckon? I had a chat with a blogger on Twitter this week about the benefits of sticking to a skincare routine and not chopping and changing products too much – I think I’m definitely going to stick with these two for a while!
We also have a Bloglovin account, so give us a follow if you want to keep up to date with our posts! 🙂
Outift of the Day: Missguided Crop & Topshop Trousers
Crop Tee – Missguided / Chain – eBay / Trousers – Topshop / Shoes – JuJu / Bag – Forever 21 / Lipstick – Barry M ‘Palest Lavendar’
Everybody, look! LOOK. I’M NOT AT WORK. On a Friday! I hope you’re all as excited as I am about this fact. Normally, having a day off work is thrilling enough, but today I’m especially excited because one of my very best friends is coming to stay with me for the weekend. I’m just about to leave the house to meet her at the station and welcome her to sunny Coventry, but thought I would quickly share what I’m wearing out for our lunch and drinks date.
This sort of thing has very much became a bit of a go-to outfit for me this year while the crop top continues to reign supreme. It’s only really been this summer that I’ve started to incorporate them into my day wardrobe, after being a bit iffy about the idea for a while. But now I think I can safely say it’s acceptable, though only when teamed with something high-waisted of course – belly buttons are the new nipples, keep them covered unless you want to cause too much of a stir.
I teamed this Missguided crop (from the Sweet Deals range which I have raved about numerous times) with these Topshop trousers that I’ve had for about a year and absolutely LOVE. They’re so light and cool, and surprisingly versatile. They crease like a bitch and as a general rule I don’t iron clothes, which is why they don’t receive quite as much love from me as they should. If you’re interested in learning a top tip from my Lazy Girl’s Guide to Living Like a Human, then to get these crease-free this morning I blasted them with my hairdryer. My trusty fave eBay gold chain adds a dollop of ghetto fabulous to the outfit, complemented by this Forever 21 chain strap bag. The JuJu jellies don’t really match seeing as they have silver glitter in but SHUT UP I LOVE THEM, aaaaaaaand today I’m even wearing a lipstick in the day, which is rather unlike me.
On that note, I am very very close to being late and leaving Chiara stranded in the mean streets of Coventry, so I must dash. I hope you all have proper jazzy weekends, LATERS.
MUA ‘Undress Me Too’ Eyeshadow Palette: Review & Swatches
Good evening lovers! Over these past couple of weeks, I definitely went on a bit of a beauty buying binge and one of my favourite new products is this oh-so-popular MUA eyeshadow palette, Undress Me Too. This retails at £4, however it was nowhere to be seen in my local Superdrug and was out of stock on both Superdrug and MUA‘s websites. For some reason though, I got obsessed with the idea of owning it one day and so ended up ordering one from an eBay seller who was selling them for about £7 – I KNOW that this is ridiculous, but Lauren was in Scotland and I had nobody to wrestle the laptop away from me.
Even though I did pay almost twice the RRP, I was still super excited when it plopped through my letterbox. Along with its predecessor, the ‘Undressed’ palette, ‘Undress Me Too’ is practically famous in the UK beauty blogging world. Both are known for being dupes of Urban Decay’s ‘Naked’ and ‘Naked 2’ palettes respectively – an association that I’m sure MUA were in no way advocating when they came up with their product names, of course..!
Now, I don’t own the Naked 2 palette so can’t comment on how much of a successful dupe it is; all I can safely say is that what we have here is a very nice little eyeshadow palette that’s pretty brilliant value for money (and even better value for money if you can buy it for RRP and not get swindled by eBay sellers). I’m not really an avid user of eyeshadows but am thinking this could be the product that changes this for me.
Naked / Devotion / Shy / Fiery / Lavish / Dreamy
Tranquil / Exposed / Reveal / Wink / Obsessed / Corrupt
As a huge fan of neutrals in everything, the shades are right up my street. There’s also a nice mixture of shimmer and matte shades in the palette, so you can create a variety of looks for different occasions. The pigmentation seems pretty good to me, and on first use there doesn’t seem to be a big problem with fall-out. The brush that comes with the palette is very basic and the packaging could be a little more inspired, but they’re really the only things to pick fault with so far. I’m very much looking forward to trying this out properly over the next couple of weeks and can see it becoming a staple part of my makeup bag.
Have any of you tried MUA‘s ‘Undress Me Too’ Palette? How do you think it matches up to Urban Decay’s ‘Naked 2’?
Body Image and Self Esteem: what is UP with girl on girl hate?
Hey gals!
Today, I’m doing a slightly different post to our usual fashion and beauty blogging; I’m planning on having a little rant and ponder. It’s not something that Claire and I usually get involved in (unless it’s when we argue about whether she likes metallic nail varnish or not…) but this is something I feel is close to my bosom and something that I feel must roam free.
So, body image, body confidence and self esteem…
I’m pretty sure ALL of us have had fat days and days where nothing seems to go right in the hair and makeup department. There are definitely days when I think ‘UGH, why does everything in my wardrobe make me look like an escaped circus elephant’. Sometimes it lasts just a day but I know there are lots of girls that suffer from long term low self esteem. I’m definitely not out to belittle that at all in this post – whether your body or self confidence issues are caused by pressure from the media, an abusive relationship or something equally as serious, low self esteem can be crippling and it’s not something to take lightly.
What I am out to have a little rant about is girls attacking each other for the way they look. Recently, a friend of mine said something along the lines of ‘I am SICK of seeing skinny girls, they piss me off’. At the time I didn’t say anything but it really got me thinking – why is it ok for us to hate someone for the way that they look just because we’re unhappy with the way that we look? I really don’t think that kind of attitude is helpful to anyone, especially not ourselves. Nobody likes a bitter person and putting other people down for the way they look is not going to make you feel ANY better about yourself in the long run.
What I’ve noticed a lot recently is hate towards slim girls especially. There’s the whole ‘real women have curves’ thing which is just silly; slim girls are not lesser people because they’re skinnier! And on the flip side, if you feel unhappy about your weight or are a bit overweight, it doesn’t make you less of a person either. It’s all about the way you present yourself and to be honest, weight or your looks don’t really come into it that much. People respond positively to a girl who is friendly, outgoing and just generally nice. Even the most beautiful person can have no mates if she treats people like shit (pardon)
Nobody is paying THAT much attention to you…
I’m a size 12 and the grand height of 5ft, so I am definitely not the slimmest gal in the erm…pot of girls?! I used to feel quite self conscious about what I looked like and for a long time, I refused to even go out anywhere with bare legs (it made for very hot summers, I assure you). I used to get massively green with envy on holiday when I saw girls with perfectly toned bikini bodies but at the end of the day I had to realise…no one cares about me that much. By which I mean, while I’m sat there on my sun lounger thinking everyone is staring at my pasty flab, everyone else is far more interested in their daiquiris and whether or not they remembered to put sun cream on their backs.
Do what makes you feel happy…
I’m a firm believer that self confidence comes from within. Remembering that you have friends who like you for you is a big part of this – they obviously like you for a reason so why shouldn’t you like you for a reason too? There’s nothing wrong with looking at yourself in the mirror and thinking ‘well, I have quite nice eyes and my hair is actually quite great’. It’s not about having an ego, it’s just about building yourself up a bit!
Saying that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing things to your appearance to make you feel comfortable and happy. Having good self esteem doesn’t mean you have to skip around in an anorak with unbrushed hair and no makeup (but if you want to do that, then go right ahead). If clipping in some hair extensions, slathering your face in makeup and wearing a pair of heels makes you feel confident, then you should just do it. I’ve had some people judge me in the past for the amount of makeup I wear or because I wear fake tan but to them I say WHO ARE YOU TO SAY WHAT I CAN AND CAN’T DO. I like the way I look with makeup and tan; it doesn’t mean I’m hiding behind a mask of St Moriz and Rimmel – it’s just what makes me feel comfortable.
I also think that if you truly are unhappy with the way you look, then do something about it. Just going to the gym regularly and eating a bit more fruit and veg can do wonders for how you look and feel. Cake is brilliant and I will always happily destroy a tub of ice cream, but nothing gives you a boost like feeling healthy. 🙂
Us gals have got to stick together…
We have GOT to stop being bitchy to each other about the way we look. At the risk of sounding like a hippy, we should all spread the love a bit more. That’s something I love about blogging especially, us bloggers are quick to let each other know if an outfit looks great or if someone is looking spiffing. That’s something I wish happened in real life a bit more. These days, instead of being envious of a girl, I try and think ‘wow, she’s got a great figure. Fair play to her, inspiration’. Let’s face it, we have to deal with so much on a daily basis – lets not fight each other too!
