If I Was A Rich Girl: Beauty Wishlist
After a bit of a shopping splurge on my birthday, I’ve actually been very well behaved recently in terms of spending. However, slowly but surely, little must-haves have started to creep their way into my mind. Here’s what’s on my mind this week…
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate
I have to confess, for years I’ve never really cared about skincare. However, I suppose because I’m now old – like properly old, like ‘I bought a slow cooker and this bar is too loud’ old – I’m suddenly obsessed with it and want to start investing in good skincare that doesn’t just come from the pound shop.
One product I’m currently craving is the extremely popular Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I first read about this over at The Little Magpie (one of my all-time favey bloggers, FYI) and have since done lots of research, all of which has blown me away. Basically, this is a magic potion that casts a spell on your skin to make you not ugly anymore. That’s the gist I get, anyway. At £36, however, it’s going to take a while for my pound shop loving brain to convince my body to hand the money over.
Kylie Jenner’s lips
Obviously I don’t mean this in a creepy Leatherface-esque way; rather, I want to achieve that crazily voluptuous effect that has got the world digging lip liner again. For a while there was speculation that the youngest Jenner sister had had her lips filled, but people quickly realised her mega pout was simply due to makeup trickery. In a lot of pictures you can actually see her natural lip line, so I’m not sure why people are still speculating, but all I’m interested in in how I too can achieve this. I’ve just bought a lipliner and matching lipstick shade so that I can try it out for myself – expect a report back soon, which may or may not involve me saying I looked like a big clown.
Mascaras were traditionally one of my favourite makeup products to try out, but since getting my Hollywood lash extensions regularly (which you can read about here), mascara’s taken a back seat as I rarely use it. If I was to buy a new one though, then without doubt it would be a Dreamweave one. This is hailed as being ‘eyelash extensions in a tube’ and supposedly lasts up to three days (though I don’t know why you’d need it to – just go to bed for heaven’s sake). This retails for around £14 from various stockists, making it a reasonable mid-priced mascara.
Has anyone tried any of the above products/techniques? If so, let me know below!
October Beauty Haul & Favourites
Aloha beauties! I originally sat down to write a September favourites post, then realised September ended 14 days ago. SORRY, WHERE IS THE TIME GOING?! So instead you get a bit of a random mixed post of things I’ve bought or have been given lately that have made me think ‘this is aiight, this’. I know, the enthusiasm is overwhelming, right?
Tantruth Ultimate Tanning Collection* – £16.99 Salon-Services
I hadn’t heard of Tantruth before I was kindly sent this range to review, but they’re a professional spray tanning brand which also stocks a retail range. This Ultimate Tanning Collection contains three of their retail products, which match the three stages of self-tanning: preparation, tanning and maintaining. The products are:
- The Perfectionist Exfoliating Body Scrub, 250ml
- The Ultimate Self–Tan Lotion, 195ml
- The Prolonger Tan Enhancing Body Moisturiser, 250ml
(Has anyone noticed I left the exfoliator at my sister’s house so it’s not in this photo? No? Oh good, our liddle secret)
I’m really impressed with the tan itself. It has a strong guide colour so you know exactly where you’re putting the tan, and the colour once applied is the closest I’ve achieved to a professional shade while at home. It’s a lotion, whereas I do usually prefer a spray or mousse, but I haven’t noticed any problems with streaking so I suppose that’s not really an issue. The exfoliator is really nice to use – and is also bright pink, so a nice addition to my sister’s bathroom. The post-tan moisturiser is the only product of the three I don’t love, mainly because it’s a very thin, milk-like moisturiser so a lot more spills out of the bottle than you expect. It’s also a bit difficult to apply because of this, BUT on the plus side it does leave skin feeling nice and has a nice whiff to it too.
Overall this is a really nice collection, and I think having the three products together is a really nice touch. I mean, we all know that we should exfoliate the night before tanning but sometimes it’s just a massive CBA. Having this box did force me to be a little more A, so props to it for that.
Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water – £4.99 Boots
Micellar water has been one of the most hyped products in skincare for a while, so I picked up this cheapo Garnier offering (as obviously I would never pay £30 for a bottle, do I look like some sort of fancy Nancy?) With no soap or alcohol, it’s supposed to be a gentle makeup remover and cleanser. And it is. Using this leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean, and is a good eye makeup remover now I’ve got my Hollywood lashes and need one without oil. So… good. That’s as enthusiastic as I’m ever going to get about skincare, I’m afraid.
Juicy Couture Couture Eau de Parfum – £64.36 for 100ml, Boots
As I’m a massive chav I’m a big fan of Juicy Couture perfumes, so was suuuuuper happy to get Couture Couture for my birthday this year. I can’t describe scents at all so I won’t even try, but it’s fresh and girly, which is what I like for my day-to-day stank. I also think it’ll go really nicely with the Juicy velour tracksuit I would also still really like to own…no? WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO?!
Barry M Gelly Nail Paints in ‘Chai’ and ‘Coconut’ – £3.99 each from Boots
Lauren and I both adore Barry M Gelly Nail Paints and so when I had to stop getting acrylics done due to silly things like council tax and TV licenses (zzzz), I knew the only thing that would cheer me up was a couple of new shades. Chai is one of the new releases for autumn and is a steel grey. Coconut is white, but a much nicer white than the plain white Barry am Nail Paint they brought out a couple of years ago. That one was a bit Tippex-y, whereas this is slightly…warmer? I don’t actually know why it’s a better white, but it just is (great reviewer, eh).
Primark Candle – £1
Finally, no, this is not a beauty item. But if you haven’t discovered the joy of Primark’s candles yet then you ain’t living life right.
What do you all think of these items? Have you tried any of them?
New Rimmel Apocolips Matte Lip Velvet | Review
There’s nothing more exciting than a new lip product, in my opinion. Whether it’s a new colour, new “technology” (paha) or even just new packaging, I am more excited by new things than is really strictly necessary. Yes, there may be horrible wars on and terrible people doing terrible things, but if we can’t get excited about new lip products then the world is an even more sad place to be.
SO, obviously I was more excited than an excited thing on legs when I saw that Rimmel had brought out another Apocolips product. I am a big fan of the original Apololips Lip Lacquer, and the Big Bang shade is a staple in my lipstick drawer. The new Apocolips products are the total opposite to the Lip Lacquer in that instead of high shine, they deliver a super matte finish.
Officially called Apocolips Matte Lip Velvet, these aim to deliver:
- Weightless colour with a velvety finish
- Colour that lasts for up to 8 hours
- Moisturising formula that increases lip moisture by 31% (very specific, I know)
So, it all sounds very promising and obviously, I totally bought into it all (I am easily convinced, particularly when Kate Moss is staring up at me). BUT, having used it a number of times since buying it last week, does it actually deliver?
Well, I would say…partially.
I was trying to describe to Claire this morning how it feels going onto my lips (ooo-er, creepy), and it is very odd. It really is weightless and it almost feels powdery when you put it on, but liquid at the same time. The only thing I can kind of compare it to feeling like is Maybelline’s Dream Matte Mousse – it’s really lightweight and barely feels like you’ve put anything on there at all. It’s actually really nice when compared with the Lip Lacquer, which can feel quite weighty when you wear it.
In terms of colour that lasts for 8 hours – I would say this is where the product falls down a little. I do have to reapply after 3-4 hours because it wears off a bit (as you would expect from eating, drinking and mouthing off at people). While I have no beef with reapplying, it’s the fact that it fades into a kind of scabby lipliner that irks me a little. I end up looking a bit mad, and with a face like mine, I don’t want to be giving anyone any more reason to think I am stark raving.
I was intrigued to see that they put a lot of emphasis on the moisturising aspect of this lippy, because I found it pretty impressive that it is such a ‘dry’ product in terms of feel, but doesn’t actually dry out your lips. Top marks on this front, Rimmel, I applaud you.
(I like looking really smug)
I bought my Apocolips Matte Lip Velvet in Orange-ology, which is a lovely bright reddy-orange shade. It is currently available in 5 shades, which you can have a nosey at here. At £6.49, it’s a pretty reasonable lip product in terms of price and I thoroughly recommend you give it a go and see what you think. Personally, I am in wuv.
If you’re keen for the new Rimmel Apocolips Matte Lip Velvet, but can’t be arsed to buy it yourself, we’re giving away Apocolips Matte Lip Velvet in Meteoric Matte in our Autumn/Winter Beauty Bundle Giveaway!
Hollywood Lashes | Review
I think we all agree that one of the most important things in life is to have a hobby. Some people like knitting, some have a great passion for tennis, while others enjoy a snorkel every now and then. My hobby, however, is a little different. I, dear readers, like getting various bits of plastic, hair and other materials stuck to me to make my body parts seem longer.
Yes, on top of my hair extensions and acrylic nails, I have now started branching into the world of semi-permanent false eyelashes. And I’m NEVER going back.
A few months ago you may have seen my review of Angel Eyes Eyelashes, which were my first venture into the world of lash extensions. I was really happy with them, but as that particular technique is only offered in some salons around the country and my nearest was around half an hour away, I didn’t end up getting the infils. However, this summer I had a hectic few months with loads of events including a holiday, hen parties and my sister’s wedding, so I wanted to give falsies another whirl. This time I opted for Hollywood lashes, which are a much more common type of eyelash extensions found in salons all over the UK. I first got them done in July, and have now had 3 sets applied so feel I’m finally ready to review the whole process properly.
Hollywood lashes are applied individually, with each lash being bonded with glue to your existing lashes. There are various lengths and thicknesses available, and your lash technician should be able to advise you on the best ones for you and the effect you want to create. I think I have the thickest lashes but not the longest – my sister had the longest ones fitted once and warned me she couldn’t wear sunglasses because they would literally touch the lens, so I steered clear of this camel way of life and went for a slightly more natural finish. When you first go to get the treatment you should be able to talk through which ones are right for you.
The whole application process takes between 45 minutes to an hour. I didn’t find it remotely uncomfortable; the glue did make my eyes water but my eyes water if there’s a bit of a strong breeze so that’s not surprising. There was no stinging or anything like that though, and the whole process was actually really relaxing.
How long do Hollywood lashes last?
As with things like hair extensions, the length of time Hollywood lashes lasts does vary depending on how well you take care of them. They’re estimated at lasting anywhere between 3-6 weeks, and longer if you get infils, which are recommended every 2-3 weeks. My first set lasted almost perfectly for around 3 weeks, and that included my holiday where they were exposed to heat and sweat. My second set, which I also left for 3 weeks, didn’t last as well but that’s because it was a very stressful few weeks for me and I STARTED TO PICK THEM. Which was stupid and entirely my fault, but it was either pick my lashes or chin a colleague out of frustration, so…
How much do Hollywood lashes cost?
If you find salons in your local area that offer Hollywood lashes, you’ll probably find that prices for a first set are around £40-50, with your infils/maintenance costing around £25. This is obviously pretty pricey and not the sort of thing a lot of us can shell out for every couple of weeks, so, like most treatments like this, I recommend finding someone who does them mobile. Most mobile lash extensionists are likely to have had the same training in applying Hollywood lashes, but will usually charge a lot less. I paid £30 for my first set and only £15 for subsequent maintenance sessions.
When it comes to finding a mobile lash technician, you can check out Facebook as a lot of them tend to have pages, or you can have a look on Gumtree or Yell. However, whether it’s for a spray tan or nails, I always tend to go with mobile therapists who are recommended to me by a friend, as I think word of mouth is really the best recommendation you can get. The girl that I go to was recommended me to be my sister who had gone to her before, so I knew I was in safe hands (on a side note, if you’re from the Coventry area and would like the name of my Hollywood lash technician then let me know and I can pass on details!)
Can you still wear makeup with Hollywood lashes?
The general advice with Hollywood lashes is that you can still wear mascara and eyeliner, though they should be oil-free products as the oil can loosen the bonds. I personally don’t feel the need to wear mascara over my falsies, as they are thick and dark enough, and also blend very well with my own lashes. When I wear eyeliner I’m just careful with my makeup removal – obviously don’t scrub at your eyes or you’re likely to dislodge lashes or pull them off. I tend to use a cotton bud with an oil-free makeup remover and gently wipe near the lashes.
Are Hollywood lashes worth it?
In a word, YES. I would definitely recommend them for holidays, as they’re great for making you look a little less tragic on no-makeup, hair-scraped-up-by-the-pool days; and also perfect for the evening when you don’t want to faff about with eyelash glue and just want to drink vodka on the balcony.
I know some people may think it’s too high maintenance to carry on getting them done after a holiday or special occasion, but I still think they’re worth it in everyday life. I genuinely adore my lashes now; they make such a difference to my appearance and make me feel more groomed, without looking too over-the-top. Here’s a snap of my lashes just before my sister’s wedding –
This set had actually already been fitted for 2 weeks at this point and were in need of maintenance, but you can see what a difference they still made.
I’m 100% converted to semi-permanent false eyelashes, but what do you think?
Brand Spotlight: Scent City
A new bottle of perfume is a welcome gift to any fine lady of class -or, you know, either of us – so we were very happy when newly-launched site Scent City got in touch with us about reviewing one of their perfumes. Scent City is a niche online perfume retailer that stocks both men and women’s fragrances from around the world. What I love about the site is the unusual layout; first you choose which category to browse based on which persona – or ‘Urbanite’ – you identify with. Are you Mr Classic, Ms Romance, Mr Tough or Ms High Maintenance? Whichever Urbanite you think represents your attitude and personality, there’ll be a selection of fragrances to choose from, including scents from brands such as Ramon Molvizar and Etat Libre d’Orange.
After careful consideration of the scents available, I opted for Early Roses by Teo Cabanel* which falls under the Ms Romance category (don’t laugh; they needn’t know that I’m an ice queen who once signed a Valentine’s Day card with simply Safe x as a ‘laugh’).
I admit that usually I probably have a natural aroma of Batiste dry shampoo mixed with Cool Original Doritos, but when it comes to artificial smells then I’m a big fan of floral scents. Early Roses, as the name kind of suggests, is therefore perfect for me. With head notes of rose and jasmine, this is a delicate, feminine smell that is light enough to be worn every day.
Early Roses is available from Scent City for £77 for a 50ml bottle, or £98 for 100ml (so you need the 100ml really, THAT’S JUST GOOD ECONOMICS).
Overall I was really pleased with the service by Scent City, and I’m sure the site will become a lot of people’s first port of call for a new fragrance. I think categorising the perfumes as they do is a great idea, and is particularly good if you’re buying a gift for someone else and have a vague idea what they like. Finally, what I think is a really nice touch is the option to request samples by emailing samples@thescentcity.com – this is perfect if you’re not too sure about buying perfumes online (which, admittedly, is a bit like shoe shopping with your eyes closed).
A huge thank you to Scent City for our bottle of Early Roses!
Have any of you tried Scent City yet? Would you buy perfume online?
Beauty Lab: Skin Perfecting Moisture Cream Review
AHOY HOY,
Hands up if you’re a beauty blogger who is slightly terrible at the whole skincare thang. It’s always tragic to admit it, particularly for fear that the blogging community will run you out of town with makeup brushes in place of pitchforks, but I am very lax when it comes to taking care of my skin properly. It’s something that has come to bite me in my slightly large bottom area, because the other day I discovered my first wrinkle. It’s on my forehead, and I have been furiously researching botox since then.
So, when I was sent some very fancy and posh moisturiser by Beauty Lab, I may have fallen to my knees and screamed ‘ZUT ALORS, THANK YOU TO ALL THAT IS GOOD AND GREAT IN THIS WORLD, PARTICULARLY HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II’. The point of this jazzy bottle of cream is to fight premature signs of ageing (i.e. Granny Lauren’s wrinkly head) and my conclusions are that it is brilliant.
It’s a deeply hydrating cream, which really suits my skin at the moment. I’ve been battling with some pretty horrific eczema over the past 6 months, some of which has been, SO unfortunately, on my forehead, eyelids and mouth (I KNOW IT IS HORRIBLE). I’ve found that it’s really helped with this in particular, and my face eczema has virtually gone after a few weeks of using this bad boy.
While being very hydrating and great (also, it’s not oily in the slightest), it also contains – and I will make a list – some very fancy stuff. Namely:
- Liquid diamond
- Ruby
- Zinc oxide sunscreen
- Antioxidants
- Vitamins
- Collagen tripeptide (what?)
- Hyaluron (what again?)
I’m pretty sure that my face is now worth about £1 million after slathering on diamonds and rubies for a week, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if we get some burglaries soon. I’m not really sure what the point of all these things is, apart from the obvious like vitamins, but whatever they’re doing is bloody fantastic.
My head wrinkle has been SERIOUSLY reduced, my skin generally looks brighter, more healthy and somehow more luminous too (must be all of those sparkly gemstones).
While I’m not usually one to comment on packaging (I’m only going to throw it away, who cares), I love the gold of both the bottle and the box it came in. I also appreciate that the bottle is made out of metal and feels weighty – because if I was going to buy this for myself, I would want a bottle that makes me feel as fancy as the product is.
Which brings me nicely onto price. The Beauty Lab skin perfecting moisture cream retails for £40 for a 30ml bottle – i.e not cheap. But, and I’m usually not the one to say this about a pricey product, it really is worth it. When it comes to skincare, it’s so important to find a product that works for you and suits your skin, which this one more than does for me. If you’d like to purchase it, which I thoroughly recommend you do, you can do so here. I’m very excited to explore more of Beauty Lab’s products, I love the look of their Overnight Repair Beauty Cream!
Have any of your fantastic people tried Beauty Lab products? What are your thoughts?
