Our New Crib | Claire’s Bedroom

Happy Monday chaps! Hope you all had a spiffingly good weekend – mine consisted of nothing more than the X Factor (each year I get sucked in, why oh why) and pizza, so that’s a pretty good one in my books.

As you may know, Lauren and I recently moved house and we took a solemn vow to do a couple of interiors posts as we know people like them. Lauren fulfilled her promise early on and you can see her boudoir by clicking on that there link. It took me a bit longer to get my act together (i.e. to pick all the socks up off my floor) but here now is a little glimpse into my bedroom. Saucy.

room 3Bed: Argos (old) / Duvet Covers and Throw: Primark

In the words of Emma Stone in the best film ever, Easy A: “this is where the magic happens, and by magic I mean absolutely nothing”. You’ll see that my obsession with white things extends beyond my car, phone, straighteners, laptop etc and fully exists in my room. Of course, there’s also plenty of leopard print, and that giant pink rabbit you can see goes by the name of Graham. People quite often look at Graham a bit oddly and then turn to me and say “Erm, you don’t strike me as a cuddly animal person”, and I’m not a cuddly animal person; I’m a Graham person. We are good friends and spooning partners.

room 2This is the view from my bed. As you can see, it’s not the hugest room in the world but then I have packed it as full of furniture as is physically possible. Nothing makes me happier in life than hella loads of storage. Apologies for the leopard print slippers that snuck in.

room 9‘Love’ Mirrors: B&M Bargains (old) / Drawers: Ikea

room 8Letter Holder: TK Maxx

room 10Clock: Matalan (old)

Despite, or maybe because of the fact that I’m the messiest person in the world, I actually have a strong dislike for clutter or things in general. I like to think these bits have an air of Parisian shabby chic about them, though maybe it’s just more shabby shit. The clock, for example, hasn’t told the right time in about a year, but still I love it. I picked the letter holder up recently from TK Maxx (aka my new favourite place in all the world and universe beyond) for around £7 and decided to try to use it as makeup storage instead. It’s now home to the majority of my Barry M nail polish collection, brushes etc.

room 4Brusali Wardrobe: Ikea

room 11Storage Boxes: TK Max

To see what’s inside my wardrobe, you can read my full wardrobe organisation post. The boxes were picked up during the same TK Maxx trip and were individually priced; I think it was around £25 in the end for all three.

room 12Photo Holder: eBay

Please divert your eyes away from all of the old photos that show me with a kind of bob. These desperately need to be updated, but printing photos falls into that ‘can I really be arsed?’ category (other things in the category: dry cleaning, eBaying, washing my hair).

room 7

room 6TV: Sony / Billy Bookcase: Ikea / Storage Boxes: Various

My bookcase is home to lots of other old photos, a random collection of books I’ve picked up at one time of another and a bit of jewellery and makeup. The three boxes in the middle contain rings, necklaces and hair grips; while the three boxes on the right contain face products, eye products and lip products. My everyday makeup bag can be seen poking out in a dishevelled manner on the bottom shelf. The bottom shelf is basically the stuff of nightmares for me – so cluttered, so bizarre. Most of this will be hidden away in a side table once I get one, but for now I just avoid looking down there.

And thus concludes my mini room tour! What do you all think?

Organising Your Wardrobe: Tips for Not Living Like a Tramp

Wardrobe1 Ladies and gentlemen, I would like you to meet the new love of my life. Yes, it is a wardrobe. Yes, I know I’m dangerously close to becoming that woman who married the Berlin wall, but just LOOK at it – have you ever seen such a fine piece of furniture in all of your life?  This little baby is a brand new addition to my brand new bedroom, and was kindly bought for me by my dad as a housewarming/’congratulations on finally passing your driving test you idiot’ present after he watched me swooning over it for a good ten minutes in the shop. It’s the Brusali wardrobe from Ikea and costs £140.

Now, I’m determined to start a new way of life in my new room – no longer do I want to be messy, live in a hovel, and be constantly worried that my piles of clothes are about to grow legs and start walking. I’m hoping that this beautiful new wardrobe will help me in my new organised way of life, and so before I filled it with all of my junk I did some research into effective storage techniques (yes, I have a lot of time on my hands, okay?) and here are a few things I learned…

1. The Clear Out Before you and your wardrobe can start your new life together, you should have a serious clear out. Go through all of your clothes and be ruthless in what you’re actually going to keep – a good rule is that if you haven’t worn something in a year, then you’re probably not going to and so it should be gone. The same applies to clothes that don’t fit you – ‘skinny’ clothes will only make you feel fat, fact – and clothes that are basically the same as other things you already own (though my personal exception to this rule is black vest tops – like hair grips and socks, I can never have enough black vests). All of these clothes are just taking up vital space in your wardrobe and, indeed, your life.

My first choice when clearing out clothes is always to put them on eBay and try to make some dollar. This is a really good idea if you’re anything like me and have a lot of dresses and outfits you’ve worn on nights out that you’re not going to wear again. With more basic clothes though – things like jumpers, t-shirts, jeans – it can be really laborious going through the whole photo taking, description writing rigmarole when the items might not even sell or only make you the measly 99p starting bid. If you’ve got a lot to stuff to get rid of, then I’ve just found out that Music Magpie now have a whole page about getting money for your old clothes as well as your CDs and DVDs, or I’ve seen a few stores recently, including Marks & Spencer and H&M, offering schemes wherein you get vouchers for donating bags of old clothes. Finally, we have the good old fashioned option of charity shops, where you can clear out a lot of old stuff and be left with the warm fuzzy feeling from do-gooding. Once you’ve got rid of all that crap unnecessary clothing, you can start creating the organised wardrobe of your dreams.

2. Storing Away One of the key things I picked up from my research is that your wardrobe should only really contain clothes you’re currently likely to wear. This helps you to see everything more clearly and to better plan your outfits. The basic idea then is that during the summer months you should store away your knitwear, and as you approach winter, pack away your bikinis, sun dresses and crop tops (sob sob, goodbye til next year my trust friends). Obviously don’t just chuck all your out-of-season clothes into your damp garage or anything; invest in some of those vacuum pack things that make your clothes all squishy, like the sartorial version of Flat Stanley, or just get some storage boxes and pop them on top of your wardrobe.

3. What to Hang and What to Fold Wardrobe6 Because for the last six months I’ve been without a wardrobe and instead have just been using rails (which I thought would look all boutiquey, but actually just made my room look like a bloody mess), the majority of my clothes have been hanging up. Faced with less rail space, then, I was a bit baffled about what to hang and what would be okay folded. The general rule seems to be quite a simple one: hang what needs to be hung. If it creases easily, then hang it up. So that’s probably things like dresses, trousers and anything with a hint of chiffon. Things that don’t need to be hung include jeans and heavy knitwear. I also chose to hang up quite a few jackets and coats I have that were cluttering up the back of my door, as well as scarves and belts. These are hung on one of the specially designed accessories hangers from Primark, but you can also get them from this eBay seller.
4. Smart Hanging Wardrobe2 It might not look it, but there actually is some semblance of logic to my hanging here. Some people like to colour co-ordinate their clothes, but… nah, that’s not for me. I’d just end up grabbing wildly at everything in my black section and never really putting any thought into anything. To make picking outfits a little easier, I decided to group my clothes together by type – so we have midi dresses at the left, then kimonos, dresses, tops, knitwear (the thin or new ones that I decided were worthy of being hung), with shorts, skirts and trousers to the right. I decided to group all of my going out dresses in the other section of the wardrobe, with the jackets, just so they weren’t as likely to get knocked every day – and also so that I’m never tempted in a moment of madness to wear sequins to work.

The Result

Wardrobe5 Wardrobe3 Wardrobe4After some ruthless sorting and, I admit, the occasional mid-organising strop followed by a power nap, I think I finally have an organised wardrobe to be proud of! I even made room in the bottom of my wardrobe for a couple of pairs of shoes (I think the shoe-shelf thing was bought from Argos, but quite a few years ago – they have lots of other shoe storage though) and my washing basket. I hate having too many things left out in my room, so being able to hide away little things like that suits my minimalist tastes perfectly. Now that everything is organised, I take a solemn vow to

  • always fold things away properly
  • pick things up if they fall off hangers
  • not throw creased or worn things into the back of the wardrobe in the hope that they’ll end up in Narnia

What do you all think of these tips? Do you have any of your own to help keep wardrobes tidy and organised?

Skint Girls’ Guide to Shopping

tumblr_lypgfhxis91qfno3aIn the words of the philosophical genius and champion of the lady humps,  Fergie: ‘IF YOU AIN’T GOT NO MONEY TAKE YOUR BROKE ASS HOME.’

So… we’re safely at home. If you and your broke ass are too, then this post is for you. I’ve been meaning to write this for a while, as Lauren and I are staunch believers that being skint is no excuse to not go shopping. It’s an excuse to not pay your rent, yes, and definitely an excuse to get away with living off Flumps and tap water for a week – but to not go shopping? We think this is simply showing a lack of dedication to the shopping cause, and we have some handy tips to help you shop on a budget.

1. Go Global
I harp on about this quite a lot already, but the amount of bargains I have had delivered from China recently is mad – mad I tell you, mad.  Everything from false eyelashes and cosmetic storage, to jewellery and clothes can be found so much cheaper online if they’re being shipped from China. My main source for tracking down these bargains is, of course, eBay. As well as good dupes of UK high street pieces, there are also some really unique stores selling things you wouldn’t find here in the UK. Here is one seller that I’m particularly obsessed with at the mo – cow-print shorts? It can’t be me that thinks these are so wrong they’re right? Of course with international deliveries comes quite a long waiting period – usually around 2-3 weeks, though I’ve had some things turn up after just 9 days or so – but as long as you shop in advance then this isn’t too much of a problem.

2.Finding the highstreet on eBay
Of course, my next tip was going to have to involve eBay too. If you don’t fancy the long shipping period of international shopping, or are looking for some recognisable British high street brands then there are a couple of ways to hunt these down on eBay. Obviously, you have the auctions where you can find either second hand pieces (often only worn once so don’t be a snob, especially if you’re skinto) or the occasional BNWT (Brand New With Tags to any non-eBayers out there) gem. If you filter your search to ‘New’ only then you can have your page filled with brand new items at cheapy prices. Another great way to find cheap high street items on the site is by searching for ‘ex’ items. I don’t really know how these come to be sold by these sellers – something to do with them being manufacturers’ overs – but there are plenty of supposedly ex-Topshop and ex-ASOS items to be found. I’ve had one or two of these before and can confirm that they’ve seemed to be authentic, but at usually around a third of what you would expect to pay for them in the shop. BARGAIN.

3. Discount Codes
Nothing can tempt you into making an online order quite like  the promise of free next day delivery or 20% off with your own exclusive discount code. Online retailers know this, and this is why they’ll occasionally throw these little treats our way. However, these discount codes aren’t really that occasional at all – 9 times out of 10, there are discount codes floating around for your favourite store that you just don’t know about. A quick Google of a phrase such as ‘Missguided discount code’ will bring up numerous sites (Latest Fashion Deals being just one that I quite regularly turn to) that will list all the latest offers or discounts available on that site. The amount of times I’ve managed to shave 10 or 20% off an order is amazing, and guess what magically happens? About 80% of your shoppers guilt is shaved off at the time. Magic, hey?

4.Check Online First
I particularly use this tip when it comes to buying new beauty items. Boots and Superdrug are the two dominant beauty shops on the high street, with both stocking most of the same brands and products. The chances are most of us will pay a cheeky visit to both of these establishments during our shopping trips, and often it’s just a case of which one we head into first that will determine which one reaps the rewards of our impulse shopping. There’s nothing more annoying, though – and I mean NOTHING – than finding out that one of them has a huge offer on a brand after you’ve just paid full price for the same products at the other one, so have a quick check online before you head off shopping to see which is the best place for the bits you know you might want.

I hope you’ve found some of these tips remotely useful. As the old saying goes, ‘take care of the pennies and the pounds take care of themselves and you have even more pennies to spend on other junk’!

I’ve documented my relationships with beauty boxes in quite a lot of detail on this blog, with Glossybox and (the artist formally known as) Beauteco  both eventually disappointing me and being unsubscribed from.  Imagine my absolute sheer delight then, when Lauren presented me with my bithday present from her and the rest of my friends and it was my VERY OWN PERSONAL BIRTHDAY BEAUTY BOX.

So, what goodies was my box jam packed with?

September Favourites: Beauty, Fashion & Lifestyle

Hey there sexies! Today I’m here to present you with our first ever monthly favourites post. We tend not to get involved with these kind of regular series’, mainly because we go through life in a bit of a daze and barely know what month we’re even in most of the time. However, my birthday is fast approaching which means for once I’m a little more aware of the the date, so thought it was as good a time as any to give it a go. To be honest, I’ll probably still lose track of the very basic principle behind this post and start waffling on about things I actually bought back in July but just bear with me – I am very, very simple.

Beauty

September Favourites 1Despite being on a bit of a spending ban, there are some things a girl simply can’t go without – bread, milk and beauty products, for example. Here are four my favourite beauty discoveries from September:

  1. Osmo Silverising Shampoo & Conditioner – My main mission during September was the bleaching and whitening of my hair (which you can read more about here and here). I’ve found this silverising shampoo and conditioner to be absolutely amazing in keeping the yellowy tones out of my hair, and after using them my hair instantly has a bit of a lift.
  2. Seventeen Flawless Poreless Primer – I ‘ve raved about this primer A LOT in this full review, but over a week on and I’m still in love with it. It creates a lovely velvety base for makeup to go on, and actually sends my pores invisible like superhero pores.
  3. Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer – All bloggers seem to love this concealer, so I suppose the only surprising thing is that I only bought it for the first time last month. It definitely lives up to the hype, and I reviewed it in full over on Jem’s blog.
  4. 3CE Lip Pigments – these were undoubtedly my favourite eBay bargains of the month. Costing only £1.80 each, these little OCC Lip Tar dupes have so far provided me with hours of mixing fun. I also reviewed these in full here

Fashion

Sep Faves Jumper

Unfortunately, my wardrobe was the place that felt my spending ban most cruelly. I didn’t really buy many new bits during the month, but my favourites were without a doubt my New Look cut-out ankle boots, worn with a variety of contrasting frilly ankle socks or with bare skin shining blindingly through.

My Topshop jeggings have also remained a staple part of my weekend wardrobe and are what I seem to throw on whenever I’m mooching around the house at the weekend and suddenly realise I actually have to face people (though this is usually just to go to the shop to buy biscuits). Knitwear has also began to sneak back into my life and my Primark fluffy cardigan has been an absolute fave of the month!

Lifestyle

Sep Faves KindleI’ve got back into the Kindle way of life, and two brilliant books I’ve read recently include Trafficked by Sophie Hayes and Room by Emma Donohue. Trafficked is the horrific true story of a British girl who was forced into sex slavery in Italy after travelling there with a man she thought she could trust; it’s gripping and intense but ultimately very inspiring. Room is the fictional account of a young boy who has been born in captivity to his kidnapped mother. The narrative is written from the perspective of the boy, which grated on me at first but eventually became completely absorbing. I’ve just started to read Goodnight Lady by Martina Cole. It’s the second Martina Cole book I’ve read and I don’t care how low brow it is, I love all that gritty East End gangster shizz. If brothels and people getting sliced up is your cup of tea, then I heartily recommend this for some easy reading.

And thus concludes my first Favourites post! What were you all loving last month?

A Week in Instagram

Instagram 2nd Sep

Instagram 2nd August 2Hey there lads and lasses. We don’t know whether anyone is remotely bovvered about what we get up to in our day to day lives, but we like to pretend that you are and insist on telling you all anyway. This is why we thought it would be a good idea to squidge together some Instagram photos to give you a visualisation of what we did last week, just in case you were dying to know (don’t lie, you were).

1. Lauren wore a hat one day, which caused quite the stir in the office. We snuck off round the back of the building to snap her OOTD pictures, which was an experience that mainly involved me shouting “STOP SQUINTING YOUR EYES” (a very annoying habit she has) and keeping our fingers crossed that nobody would come out for a fag break and catch us being idiots.
2. It was Lauren’s birthday a couple of weeks ago, and one of the lovely gifts she received from her… gentleman caller (she may kill me for writing this)… was an amazing champagne and spirit tasting event at Selfridges in the Bullring. While I spent my night at home in the Bitch Shack, seething with jealousy, she spent her evening ‘sampling’ fine wines and spirits – i.e. getting twatted for free. Jammy.
3. Embracing texture in my new fluffy Primark cardigan with my new quilted leather iPhone case at work last week. Yes, that is our work’s toilet.
4. We went on a soup and fruit detox for three whole days in an attempt to clear our bodies of the utter junk we had filled them with. After our carb-less cleanse, we gorged ourselves on sweets and crisps. That’s how it works, right?
5. I went out for lunch with my friend Lisa on Saturday, to a lovely new bar called The Artisan. It is SO pretty, plus they do lethal cocktails, thus I have chosen it as the place I’m going to go for my birthday next month so I can pretend that I’m going to be sophisticated once I’m 23.
6. Lauren’s FOTD for an evening out in Birmingham over the weekend.
7. I bleached my hair! But more of that in a post to come in the next couple of days…
8. Monday mornings… enough said.

These photos were all taken from our blog Instagram @StylingoUK and my personal account. Don’t forget to follow us!
